Roy Stuart, an American photographer who resides in Paris, has earned his well-deserved international recognition through his originality, willingness to break the rules, inspired irreverence and ongoing criticism of our stale, incompetent sexuality.
He tends to work with everyday people rather than professional models, nearly always women. He parodies stereotypical sexual behaviour, provocatively inverting power relationships in sex, continuously seeking to capture the authentic moment when sexual instinct is liberated and portray it honestly and unashamedly.
German publishing house Taschen to date have published a series of Stuarts books (“Roy Stuart, Volume I”, “Volume II”, “Volume III” and “The Fourth Body”), and are yet to release his latest book entitled “Roy Stuart V”.
The powerful eroticism of his photography is explicit and striking. His technical expertise invites us into the forbidden world he portrays through suggestive images of models that unmask the sexuality that lies latent in everyday life.
What role does sex play in Your life? In Your work?
More in my work than in my life
What image turns You on?
One in which desire is present
Where did You have Your first sexual experience?
Rue St. Denis,Paris, France
Which dish do you “devour” with greatest delight?
I am vegetarian and I'm not into devouring food.
Do You want to say anything else?
Without sounding too pretentious what essentialy inspired me in this work was best expressed by Angela Carter from the preface to The SadeianWomen:
Nothing exercises such power over the imagination as the nature of sexual relationships, and the pornographer has it in his power to become terrorist of the imagination, a sexual guerilla whose purpose is to overturn our most basic notions of these relations, to reinstitute sexuality as a primarry mode of being rather than specialised area vacation from being...
